Cuándo empezó su carrera : Tom Petty formó a los 17 años Mudcrutch, pero tras firmar por el sello Shelter Records -fundado por Leon Russell-, el grupo se separó. Años más tarde Petty consiguió reclutar al guitarrista Mike Campbelll y al teclista Benmont Tench, miembros de su primera banda, y a ellos se unieron el bajista Ron Blair y el batería Stan Lynch para llamarse ahora The Heartbreakers. Petty todavía tenía firmado el contrato con Shelter Records, sello para el que grabó su debut, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (1976).
Un par de álbums: Damn the torpedoes (1979) o Full Moon fever (1989), su primer disco en solitario. En todo caso, durante toda su carrera hasta su más reciente The last DJ, la calidad apenas ha bajado un ápice.
