Cuando empezó su carrera: La banda se formó en 1976 o 1977 en Consett, Durham County, Inglaterra. Paddy McAloon quiso que su nombre fuera llamativo, como Tyrannosaurus Rex, Moby Grape o Grand Funk Railroad. En septiembre de 1982 graban los temas The Devil has all the best tunesy Walk on,y son escuchados por Keith Armstrong, de la compañía Kitchenware Records, que ficha al grupo. Publican su primer single en 1983.
