En 1972 triunfa la música de color desde distintos sellos: la Motown con Michael Jackson en solitario, The Temptations, o los Chi-Lites desde Chicago. Empieza a cobrar importancia también el sonido Filadelfia, de la mano de Harold Melvin & Blue Notes o Billy Paul. En nuestro país contrasta lasuenan los cantautores con adaptaciones de versos de Machado o Miguel Hernández (Serrat o Lobos con la adaptación de Vientos del pueblo, que llegaría al número uno). También es el año de otros número uno en España, como El chico de la armónica de Micky, Un beso y una flor de Nino Bravo, Dama, dama de Cecilia o Cantares de Miguel Ríos.
