El 1 de abril de 1984 tras una acalorada discusión, Marvin Gaye fue abatido por su padre de dos disparos. Era el epílogo, en la víspera de su 45 cumpleaños, el trágico final de la trayectoria de un músico que en sus últimos días se había hundido en las drogas, a pesar de haber recuperado el timón de su carrera.
Cómo empezó su carrera: A los 15 años Gaye cantaba en la iglesia de su padre y en el grupo Rainbows. Con ellos ganó un concurso de talentos, cambiando su nombre al de The Marquees. Fue fichado como batería en los principios de Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. Tras esta etapa descubrió su verdadera vocación, quería ser cantante de jazz, primero con un grupo llamado The Moonglows, dedicados a la música doowop, liderado por Harvey Fuqua. Gracias a Fuqua conoció en 1961 a Anna Gordy, hermana del jefazo de la Motown, Berry Gordy. Con ella contrajo matrimonio en 1962, firmó un contrato con la Tamla Motown, y un primer disco, The soulful moods of Marvin Gaye, un desastre comercial, que obligó a cambiar a Gaye su estilo de música pasando al Soul puro.

Composición: En sus primeros discos puso voz a muchas de las composiciones de Holland-Dozier-Holland, la pareja Ashford & Simpson -sobre todo con sus dúos con Tammi Terrel- o Smokey Robinson (coautor, por otra parte, de una de sus últimas canciones póstumas, Symphony). Gran parte, sin embargo, por no decir la mayor parte de sus grandes éxitos fueron escritos o coescritos por él, como Wherever I lay my hat, I heard it through the gravepine o las canciones que formaban parte del clásico What´s going on.
